Aussies In Europe: May 11
Goal.com's Chris Paraskevas is on-hand to wrap up the late-season contributions of Australia's European stars.
11 May 2009 04:01:19
Harry Kewell (Galatasaray, Turkey)
Introduced as a last-minute substitute as Galatasaray kept alive their slim hopes of a title win – they are seven points behind Besiktas with three games remaining but perhaps more importantly, are one ahead of rivals Fenerbahce in the race for fourth place and the final Europa League spot.
Mark Viduka (Newcastle United, England)
Should be given a starting role when Shearer’s Newcastle take on Middlesbrough at home in a relegation six-pointer on Tuesday morning; a must-win for either side if they are to have any hope of avoiding relegation this season.
Tim Cahill (Everton, England)
Played 90 minutes and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions during his side’s scoreless home draw with Tottenham; Europa League football has been confirmed for next season and the Toffees have an FA Cup final to now prepare for.
Mark Schwarzer (Fulham, England)
Superb again for the Cottagers in between the posts and it is appropriate that he made another string of saves during the 3-1 home win over Aston Villa to keep alive their push for European football next season – it would not have been capable without him.
Lucas Neill (West Ham United, England)
A shadow of the imperious figure that he is for Australia when he plays for West Ham. Struggled during the 3-0 home loss to Liverpool that has set-back their chase for a final Europa League place that Fulham currently occupy.
Brett Emerton, Vince Grella (Blackburn Rovers, England)
Grella played a full game as Allardyce’s men secured their top-flight status with a 2-0 home win over Portsmouth. Emerton remains sidelined with a long-term injury.
Mark Bresciano (Palermo, Italy)
Finally made a return to action, introduced after just ten minutes as his side lost 1-0 away against Siena.
Jason Culina (PSV Eindhoven, Netherlands)
Given 85 minutes as his side beat Willem II 3-0 away from home, helping them to salvage Europa League football; it signals the end of the Eredivisie season and Culina’s last match for PSV – he will now move to the Gold Coast.
Luke Wilkshire (Dinamo Moscow, Russia)
Play a full game as his side suffered a 2-1 home loss against Moscow rivals CSKA.
Scott McDonald (Celtic, Scotland)
Didn’t have any chances of note as his side crashed to a 1-0 defeat at Ibrox against bitter rivals Rangers, with the latter taking a huge step toward the Scottish Premier League title.
Carl Valeri (Grosseto, Italy)
Given a full game as Grosseto were reduced to nine men and beaten 3-0 away by Rimini.
Brad Jones (Middlesbrough, England)
Will take up his post as Borough’s first-choice when they clash with Newcastle on Tuesday morning, virtually needing a victory to keep alive their survival hopes.
Richard Garcia (Hull City, England)
Produced a lively 61 minutes before being replaced as the relegation-threatened Tigers crashed to a 2-1 home defeat against Stoke City; the Socceroo created some decent scoring opportunities for himself but was denied by goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen.
Scott Chipperfield (FC Basel, Switzerland)
Wasn’t in the squad beaten 2-1 away by FC Aarau.
Joshua Kennedy (Karlsruhe, Germany)
With three games left to play Karlsruhe are four points adrift of safety after a 4-0 loss away to Borussia Dortmund, where at 1-0 Kennedy was unlucky to see an effort come back of the post.
Bruce Djite, James Troisi, Mile Jedinak (Genclerbirligi, Turkey)
No sign of Jedinak but Djite played a full game in a 3-1 win over Genclerbirligi OFTAS, keeping them three points clear of the relegation zone with three games remaining; Troisi appeared for the last eight minutes.
Brett Holman (AZ Alkmaar, Netherlands)
Wasn’t in the squad as the Dutch champions beat hosted and beat Heerenveen 3-1.
Michael Petkovic (Sivasspor, Turkey)
Played a full game as his side surrendered first place, losing 2-1 at home to Istanbul Buyuksehir BSK.
Nick Carle (Crystal Palace, England)
End of Championship season.
Adam Federici (Reading, England)
An unused substitute as his side lost the first leg of their Championship play-off away to Burnley 1-0.
Mile Sterjovski, Ruben Zadkovich (Derby County, England)
End of Championship season.
David Carney, Adrian Leijer (Norwich City, England)
End of Championship season with Norwich relegated.
Michael Beauchamp (AaB, Denmark)
His side face Aarhus on Tuesday.
Nikita Rukavytsya (FC Twente, Netherlands)
Wasn’t in the squad for the 1-0 loss away to Ajax.
Dario Vidosic, Matthew Spiranovic (Nurnberg, Germany)
Another strike by Vidosic as his side kept up their promotion push with a 1-1 draw away against Greuther Furth, leaving them third with three games left in the German 2. Bundesliga.
Nathan Burns (AEK Athens, Greece)
Wasn’t in the squad for his side’s first-up play-off win over Larissa – they are chasing Champions League football.
Shane Steffanutto (FC Lyn Oslo, Norway)
Given a full game in the midweek draw with Rosenborg.
Patrick Kisnorbo (Leicester City, England)
End of League One season with Leicester promoted.
Chris Coyne (Colchester United, England)
End of League One season.
Neil Kilkenny (Leeds United, England)
Played a full game as Leeds lost the first leg of their League One play-off against Miwall.
Trent McClenahan (Hamilton, Scotland)
Long-term hernia injury.
Dean Bouzanis (Liverpool, England)
A half-time substitute in his reserve side’s 1-0 friendly loss against Ajax.
Chris Paraskevas, Goal.com
Never realised how many Aussie's there are in the overseas leagues, and how many are over there that aren't in the English leagues...I know we've had a run recently going to Turkey, but I didn't realise how many other non-English clubs have seen our players come through their doors.
