A report in The Times this morning claims that "West Ham have inquired about Rod Fanni, the Rennes right back, as a replacement for Lucas Neill."

Fanni, 27, has long been linked with a move to English football and having emerged as one of the best right backs in France last season, could fit in well to the Premier League.

The 6.0ft attacking minded defender can also play in central defence and on the right side of midfield, his contract at Rennes expires at the end of the 2010/2011 season.

Fanni played for France in the international friendly match against Nigeria on Tuesday night and claimed a place in the Ligue Team of the Year at the end of the 2008/2009 season.

It has taken some time for Fanni to emerge as one of the top players in France, he has had spells at Nice, Lens and Chateauroux, but now appears to have the physical qualities to be a major success in English football.
